They do the hard, technical work, while leaving the author in complete control of the process so they get the book they envisioned.  Other processes may leave them short of this goal.

If handled well, self publishng can be great fun and no great amount of trouble.  Their job is to see that it works out that way.

They save authors money by finding the best providers for various services.  They get you great quotes for your printing, because printers they deal with know their files for your book will be complete, accurate and trouble free.  They can also be a good resource for people doing their own publishing, giving them information about legal and registration issues and the technical problems of economical, high-quality printing.  If you are technical savvy, they will gladly advice you on doing any or all of the work yourself.  If you need an illustrator or cover artist, they do that work or find you someone to do it.  If you are already working with an artist, they can advise them about producing art ready for trouble-free lay-out and printing.

They keep costs low because they are very efficient.  Your book will be done in one or two passes and presented to the printer clean and ready to print properly, something you don’t always find elsewhere.
