Jerry D. Simmons- Contents of Oct. 22, 2009 TIPS FOR WRITERS from the PUBLISHING INSIDER

- TIPS for WRITERS from the PUBLISHING INSIDER. This eNewsletter is published by Jerry D. Simmons and WritersReaders.com where we take pride in preparing writers for success.

What is Different? – I’m often asked why writers should subscribe to my newsletter and even though I’ve addressed this before let me once again share my thoughts. There are plenty of newsletters for writers, authors and publishers but none quite like mine. I strongly believe that if you wish to pursue a career in publishing, as an author or publisher you must be aware of what’s going on in the business. Few people have the time to read all the trade magazines or have contacts in New York to check the pulse of the industry and discover what’s going on inside the meeting rooms of the major publishers. This is my job, I have the time and contacts.

My goal here is to share with you the latest topics, articles, and issues that I believe are important to you as authors and publishers. The more informed you are the better you will understand the business and the better you understand the business the more successful you can become. If you’ve heard me speak you will know that my message is simple–you need to understand the business and how it works if you hope to be successful selling books. My newsletter is timely and issue oriented and I intend for it to be different until the time comes when it isn’t fun anymore. For the time being I’ll continue writing this newsletter. I hope you enjoy it and will share with your friends.

Reader Comment – Jerry, please stop this:

Publishing independently, also referred to as self-publishing, vanity or subsidy publishing;

This is a war I continue to have to fight far too often. You and I both know that publishing independently isn’t vanity publishing. But when people like you, who are respected in the publishing industry, lump the terms together, it gets taken as fact.

Please don’t lump that nasty term in with self or indi publishing :(

Response – Kelly is a friend, fellow publisher and absolutely 100% correct! That was my mistake and it won’t happen again. I fight the same battles and publishing independently is nothing even close to Vanity Publishing. Kelly – my apology!

 An Author Shares Sales Numbers – I try not to print entire articles, for the sake of time and space. However the following was brought to my attention by an associate of mine and I felt it was important enough to re-print in it’s entirety. The author of this piece is Joe Konrath who is a traditionally published author. He shares his sales and thoughts about his own future as an author.

Kindle Numbers: Traditional Publishing vs. Self Publishing – Posted to the web by Author Joe Konrath

Independent Publishing – Joe is typical, the math is not.

When You’ve Hit a Wall: Five Ways to Get Unstuck -
by Diane O’Connell

“I can state categorically that my first novel would never have been published without Diane.”  — Cody McFadyen, international bestselling author of Shadow Man, The Face of Death, and The Darker Side (Bantam).

Writing is Hard – We all know that and recognize the time and effort it takes to complete a  manuscript.

Did You Happen to Notice? – The past couple of weeks two important things happened: Wal-Mart and Amazon started a price war on bestselling hardcovers and Barnes & Nobel introduced “the world’s most advanced eBook reader.”

Please Pass It On! If you find my newsletter helpful, please forward to a friend, colleague or family member who happens to be a writer. If they would like their own copy, send an email, jerry@writersreaders.com. With your sign-up I’ll send you my 20-page eBook titled “What Writers Need to Know About Marketing.”
