Kore Press- Benefit Reading & Celebration for Chax Press & Voices, Inc

The BENEFIT READING & CELEBRATION for CHAX PRESS & VOICES, Inc., is fast approaching, in all its glory. It takes place on October 30, 2009, and we want YOU to be there, at 7:00pm at The Rogue Theatre in the Historic YWCA Building, entrance at 300 E. University Blvd., between 4th Ave & 5th Ave. Parking is available. A reception at 6:00pm will include food and drink.

VOICES, Inc., is a community-based nonprofit organization in downtown Tucson that provides youth with safe space, positive relationships, and skills training to document real-life stories through multiple publications and programs. Chax Press is a Tucson nonprofit literary and book arts organization with programs in literary publishing, fine art bookmaking, education, and exhibitions.

As if supporting Chax Press & VOICES, Inc., weren’t enough, this event features book launches and a book preview, in poetry readings by LINH DINH, STEPHANIE BALZER, and JONATHAN ROTHSCHILD.

LINH DINH is a Vietnamese-American poet whose work takes on American culture, the International flow of Capital, and the social fabric of our time, in a way that is every bit as biting as it is illuminating. He is a unique voice, not to be missed. He has pleased Tucson audiences on a previous occasion, as well as audiences throughout North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Chax Press has published two books by Linh Dinh thus far: American Tatts and Jam Alerts, both among the top selling books at Small Press Distribution, the most important distributor of independent press literary books in North America. Linh Dinh’s new book, Some Kind of Cheese Orgy, will be unveiled for the first time at this event!

STEPHANIE BALZER is the Executive Director of VOICES, Inc., having gone there after a terrific few years at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. She received her MFA from the University of Arizona a few years ago, and has been active in the Tucson poetry community as an editor for the journal CUE. She won a fellowship in 2008 from the Poetry Center at the University of Arizona. She has a forthcoming book and chapbook: Revenant, from Tucson’s own Kore Press, and faster, faster, from Cue Books.

JONATHAN ROTHSCHILD is a Tucson attorney and long-time supporter of poetry and the arts, as well as a key activist in community affairs. He was educated at Tulane University, Kenyon College, and the University of New Mexico. He is a member of the American Academy of Poets and The Poetry Society of America. Jonathan’s first book of poetry is The Last Clubhouse Eulogy, which will also receive its initial launch at this event!

But the key ingredient at this invent, and for the continued success of CHAX PRESS & VOICES, Inc., is YOU! We need you to purchase a ticket and attend this event. Please purchase two tickets (or more) and bring a partner or friend(s). If you can not attend, please purchase one or two tickets and give them as gifts, or instruct us to give them to some deserving student or poet who can not otherwise attend — if you do not know one, we do, and we will be thankful to you for helping these two organizations succeed in their charitable activities, and for providing such an opportunity for someone else. But, hopefully, YOU WILL ATTEND and have a wonderful time at this important event, the first collaboration of Chax Press & VOICES, Inc.

ALL TICKETS are $10, and tickets are available from Chax Press (520-620-1626), from VOICES, Inc. (520-622-7458), and at ANTIGONE Bookstore and BENTLEY’s House of Coffee and Tea. For addresses and directions for ticket sales, please call Chax Press at 520-620-1626. Tickets are also available at the door if space permits, but space is limited, and it is important to purchase your tickets soon.

A color flyer, in PDF form, is available. If you wish to see it, please request it by return email.

THANK YOU!
