Niki Herd, Adela Licona & FARR speak out
The state of Arizona has made national news in the last month over the controversial new anti-immigration legislation, SB1070. Here are three pieces about the new law by poet Niki Herd, educator, activist, writer, and rhetorician Adela Liconaand FARR, the Feminist Action Research in Rhetoric groups at the University of Arizona. Delve into the full controversy on our blog, but get a taste of the fury here:
Niki Herd: My Kind, To Your Kind
To live in this country with the skin on my back is to always be suspect. I walk into a store–I become a potential thief–and am followed. I pick up the telephone to address an issue at the workplace and colleagues and clients marvel at how articulate I am.
Adela Licona: Why I am Opposed to SB1070
I’m opposed to SB 1070 because it is a smokescreen that keeps us from seeking answers to questions such was what motivates migration? And not only who benefits from exploitative labor and its productions–but who is accountable for it?
We call on the members of our community, law enforcement, state government, and the rest of the country to speak out against this bill. We must educate those who may not understand the specific problems and long-lasting consequences with the wording and intent of this measure. SB1070 will not make our borders more secure or our neighborhoods safer; it threatens the humanity of all people living and working in this border state.
