Arizona Opera- Presents Giuseppe Verdi’s OTELLO

Arizona Opera Presents Giuseppe Verdi’s OTELLO 1011 Season

March 5 & 6 at Tucson Music Hall

March 11, 12, & 13

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A MAN LISTENS TO HIS WORST FEARS?

Even the strongest man can be destroyed by jealousy and rumor. In this retelling of Shakespearre’s play, Otello, a warrior, returns home from battle. Now the governor of Cyprus, Otello has made a deadly enemy: the treacerous Iago, who pretends to be his friend. As Iago spins a web of deceit and lies, Otello begins to doubt the faithfulness of his beloved wife, Desdemona. Caught between evil whispers and voices of his own heart, Otello must decide what- and who- he believes.

Often considered Verdi’s greatest opera, OTELLO is faithful to the text of Shakespeare’s original play. Tenor Allan Glassman, a gifted mainstay at the Methropolitan Opera, portrays the tragic Moor. His towering presence is the perfect complement to the set’s tall, dramatic projections, powerfully evoking the stormy Venetian harbor. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Allan Glassman as Otello

Jennifer Black as Desdemona

Todd Thomas as Iago

University of Arizona Poetry Center- Presents Next Word in Poetry: Kazim Ali and Ana Bozicevic

Next Week at the Poetry Center:

Next Word in Poetry:
Kazim Ali and Ana Božičević
February 24 at 8 p.m.

Kazim Ali is the author of two books of poetry: The Fortieth Day and The Far Mosque. He has also written two novels—Quinn’s Passage and The Disappearance of Seth—and an autobiographical work entitled Bright Felon: Autobiography and Cities. Ana Božičević was born in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1977. She emigrated to New York City in 1997. Her first book of poems is Stars of the Night Commute, a Lambda Literary Award finalist. Her fifth chapbook, Depth Hoar, will be published by Cinematheque Press in 2010. With Amy King, Ana co-curates The Stain of Poetry reading series in Brooklyn.

The Next Word in Poetry series features innovative writers who are perhaps in the early stages of their careers, and who bring something fresh and exciting to the form. Since 2003, the Poetry Center has featured group readings by innovative and emerging writers who define the concept of “The Next Word” and have gone on to enjoy significant acclaim. Our current Library Exhibition looks back at those poets and their works. This exhibition comes down next week, so stop in to see it! Our next exhibition, Literary Publishing in Tucson, coincides with the upcoming Lit Press Fest.

Sydney Writers’ Centre- WEBPICK: Postcrosser

WEBPICK: Postcrosser
If the art of letter-writing is a dying one, here’s something that may just delay the inevitable. Postcrosser is the brain-child of Paulo Magalhães, a Portuguese systems administrator now living in Slovenia. His love for receiving and sending postcards from around the world prompted him to set up the Postcrosser website in 2005. The goal of the website is simple: to connect people across the world through postcards, independent of their location, age, gender, race or beliefs.

In the five years since Postcrosser started, almost 5 million postcards have been sent and received. To be a part of the phenomenon, all you have to do is set up an account. You’ll then be given the details of a fellow Postcrosser. Send them a postcard and, once they’ve registered your postcard on their account, another Postcrosser will be given your details – and you too will start receiving news from around the world!
