Arizona Opera Presents Giuseppe Verdi’s OTELLO 1011 Season
March 5 & 6 at Tucson Music Hall
March 11, 12, & 13
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A MAN LISTENS TO HIS WORST FEARS?
Even the strongest man can be destroyed by jealousy and rumor. In this retelling of Shakespearre’s play, Otello, a warrior, returns home from battle. Now the governor of Cyprus, Otello has made a deadly enemy: the treacerous Iago, who pretends to be his friend. As Iago spins a web of deceit and lies, Otello begins to doubt the faithfulness of his beloved wife, Desdemona. Caught between evil whispers and voices of his own heart, Otello must decide what- and who- he believes.
Often considered Verdi’s greatest opera, OTELLO is faithful to the text of Shakespeare’s original play. Tenor Allan Glassman, a gifted mainstay at the Methropolitan Opera, portrays the tragic Moor. His towering presence is the perfect complement to the set’s tall, dramatic projections, powerfully evoking the stormy Venetian harbor. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
