Randy Ford Author- Revised ON THE EDGE Act Three 6th Installment

Martha
Amy, what do you think your father would’ve done had he’d found your note? What’s going on with you? Why didn’t you come to us before it got so bad? To start with your father adores you and would do anything for you. We both love you. He says we ought to have put our foot down. We don’t always agree, but for Christ’s sakes…for sure we agree on one thing and that is we both love you.

Amy
What did you do with the note?
(Martha shows that she has the note by taking it out of her purse.)
Don’t tell Dad, for God’s sake don’t tell him.

Colin
You start off every time with something like…
(Sunshine appears)
Start at the very beginning and from the beginning tell me everything that happened.

Sunshine
Everything? Cain’t do nothin’…nothin’ about it. Get off me! Sometimes in the bed. Sometimes on the floor. Sometimes under a blanket.. Sometimes mama’s around. Sometimes not.

Colin
And then what would happened? What would happen in the bed?
(Pause)
You’re in the bed, and he’s…

Sunshine
Daddy. That’s who.

Colin
Daddy. Then what? And on the floor what? Simply tell me what happened from the beginning to the end…what happened in bed, on the floor, then under a blanket. Everything. Completely. And then what happened? You’re doing a good job. What else? You can tell me. No, no, no. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not easy. I know. It’s not easy. And it’s not your fault

Sunshine
He…he…

Colin
Yes?

Sunshine
He’d pull down my undies. I’d close my eyes, and…

Colin
You’d close your eyes. And then what?

Sunshine
Eyes closed. I’d close them tight.

Colin
And then what?

Sunshine
Lights out and…

Colin
“You guys don’t do shit.” Fourteen and a prostitute. And pedophiles love children. And…

Martha
(After tearing up Amy’s note.)
There! Now, what’s going on. I’m giving you a chance. I won’t tell your dad, if you’ll tell me what’s going on.

Amy
I messed up. That’s it. I messed up. Now can I go home?

Martha
Once again it’s not up to me. Or you’re dad. But we’ll stand by you, Amy. We will. We’ll be there for you.

Amy
Okay, okay.

Martha
I know we failed you.

Amy
Enough.

Martha
I think we’ll get through this, Amy, but you’ve got to learn. You broke the law.

Amy
All right, I’m sorry. What more do you want me to say? I’m sorry. Now what do I have do? Oh, I know. It’s not up to you.

Martha
You’ll have to take your medicine. You’ve been suspended from school. The rest is up to a judge, and if you’re lucky, you’ll only have to do community service and end up on probation. And your dad and I will have to pay restitution. You’ll have to keep your nose clean.

Amy
And there are other things, aren’t there?

Martha
There may be. There almost always are. There’s your dad and me, and you have some things to set right with your dad. I should spank you, but I know I better. You’re too old to spank.

Amy
I’ve been bad, bad, bad. Bad, bad, bad, I deserve a spanking.

Martha
Stop Amy. Stop it now. Give me a hug. And God, how I need a hug.

Playwrights Foundation- PLAYWRIGHTS FOUNDATION HITS MANHATTAN!

Playwrights Foundation Hits Manhattan!

It’s an exciting Fall for PF as Artistic Director Amy Mueller heads to New York with Resident Playwright Christopher Chen and Marissa Wolf of Crowded Fire Theater for a workshop of Chen’s new play, The Hundred Flowers Project, at the Lark Play Development Center. There is an invited rehearsal on Wednesday, September 28 at 6pm. Please contact Amy Mueller for an invitation at amy@playwrightsfoundation.org

Adriana Baer directs the piece, which examines the reign of Mao Tse-Tung and its effect on modern day China through the lens of an American theater ensemble who engage in the making of an epic piece about the Cultural Revolution. The project is a partnership with Crowded Fire Theater, which will host the premiere of Chen’s play in October 2012 in San Francisco. The Lark workshop is made possible through the Sister City Playwrights Exchange program at PF, which provides funding for playwrights to travel to new regions in order to strengthen the development of their work.

Also on the itinerary is celebrating the opening of alumni playwright Katori Hall’s play THE MOUNTAINTOP, featured in the 2008 Bay Area Playwrights Festival. The controversial script, which imagines Martin Luther King, Jr. on the night before his assassination, opens on Broadway October 13th, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Basset. Congratulations, Katori!
