Society of Southwestern Authors- May 20, 2012 Writing Forum at New Location and Hosts Harvey Stanbrough “Seven Surefire Ways to Run off Your Reader”

We missed those of you who couldn’t come to our first gathering in our new location following a necessary notification from the Four Points Sheraton who had given us such wonderful service for seven years. Our thanks go out to all our members who made this move possible. Under pressure for Mike’s Write Word deadline, Jan Frost, Forum chair, with the help of encouraging voices from our membership, found a home for our forums IN TWO DAYS that was easily accessible, affordable and charming. Tons of parking space; sunshine; WONDERFUL acoustics; DELICIOUS food; FRIENDLINESS; and COMFORT.

THE TUCSON CITY CENTER INN SUITES (At I-10 & St. Mary’s)
WAS AWESOME

Totally remodeled, warm, beautiful, and atmosphere exploding with unparalleled writer’s energy…
… PLUS…
the charm and talent of SSA member, actress/author, Dorothy Daniels Anderson, who held us breathless, and literally glued to our seats until her standing ovation.

This was a forum to be remembered. Twenty-four authors laughed together, shared news about writing, and the ups and downs of traditional publishing, self-publishing, epublishing, AND the invitation to come next month on May the 20th, 2012 to hear

Daniel T. Denman Author- GRISLY-BAR CROSSING

GRISLY-BAR CROSSING

by Daniel T. Denman

Never before had four, female, foreign operatives been kidnapped on American soil! And now, one by one, the attractive heroines were found dismembered at the Crossing. Several FBI teams were investigating these terrifying murders – copycat crimes of yesteryear. The killings were so foul, so grisly, the town had been named Grisly-Bar Crossing after these unspeakable, resurfacing murders!

Two FBI teams advanced on the mansion that held the abducted agents and their captors: a nearly mad woman seeking revenge and her crafty daughter. The villains planned to use the agents as bait. What they could not understand was why the military was so interested in the powerful force their heir had left behind – a force that would alter wars forever!

Prior to this vengeful plot, 6,000 Americans had received an unusual warning in the form an identical dream! All recorded and repeated the revelation verbatim and became known as the dream keepers. Some feared they would be labeled “insane,” but many were so disturbed by the dream, they contacted their doctors. A consortium of the medical field viewed so many people professing an identical dream as a real concern.

The dream keepers were trying desperately to convince the government and media to release their unified vision. One adamant psychologist (herself a dream keeper) told a newscaster, “It doesn’t make sense! To NOT warn others is . . . is ludicrous!” Miraculously, the scientific and religious communities were in agreement and were trying to discuss the implications of the common, shared dreams. Simplified, the dream claimed: every six months until America wakes up and realizes it was once a blessed nation, an increasing earthquake will ‘rock your very souls!’

Time was running out. There were only two weeks until the first predicted quake would take place. Who delivered this dream and how was it sent? Was this a grand hoax or were too many humans not interested enough to care? Moral decline caused greed and loss for millions, and hope seemed to be one of America’s old adages. There were those who saw this shared dream as revitalization of their once great country, and to the wise individuals, extraordinary achievements were possible. Key in avoiding disaster would be unified acceptance to change. The dream demanded change! Would American citizens see, understand, and accept the lesson?

What we’re reading
This week Sydney Writers’ Centre course manager, Danielle Williams, is reading Eleven Seasons by Paul D. Carter. She writes:

This year’s The Australian/Vogel’s Literary Award winner is a football-loving, high school teacher from Melbourne. So it’s no surprise that his debut novel, Eleven Seasons, uses the great game of VFL (or AFL) as a backdrop to his coming-of-age story.

Eleven Seasons is the story of Jason Dalton, a teenager who lives in inner Melbourne and dreams of one day playing at the MCG for his team. Jason has grown up looking after himself as his mother works long hours as a nurse, saving for the house in the country she craves.

Jason is a methodical and committed player for his under-nineteens team, and this comes through in his life as well. But eventually a family secret so awful it’s been kept from him since he was born comes to light and he’s forced to re-assess his place in the world.

It would be easy to assume this is a football novel for young adults. But it’s not – it’s much more than that. It’s a snapshot of life in late 1980s and 1990s Melbourne and an exploration of the tribal nature of football and teenagers – and what it’s like to be on the outside of that.

This year’s judges were unanimous in their decision to award the prize to Paul Carter, and I can see why. If you want to support new Australian writing, you should definitely get your hands on this book.

We want to know what you’re reading! You can write a book review for the Writing Bar and we’ll feature an excerpt here in the newsletter.

THE TALE OF JACOB’S JOURNEY

by Dr. Ellen Larkin Woodruff

Illustrated by Dot Samuel

Jacob Timothy Wormeley lives at Rosegill Farm in rural Middlesex County, near Urbanna, Virginia. He is a happy field mouse until his world is disrupted by the arrival of a thresher which strips his familiar farm field. Jacob’s home, school, and beloved corn supply are suddenly gone. Forced to relocate, Jacob Timothy runs into strange, new creatures. Jacob moves from one harrowing adventure to the next. Jacob finally finds a new home in a barn that is not as safe as he initially thought it would be. Winter has set in, and Jacob is in danger of starving and freezing to death; his life now is quite bleak. Eventually, Jacob finds himself in a church. It is here that he begins a new and wonderful chapter in the life of Jacob Timothy Wormeley.

University of Arizona Poetry Center- 2012 Poetry Off the Page: Limited Space; Act Now!

University of Arizona Poetry Center- 2012 Poetry Off the Page: Limited Space; Act Now!

Poetry Off the Page, the Poetry Center’s third biennial symposium, will present some of today’s most intriguing and adventurous poets, those who forge new literary territory with the help of modern technologies; those daring to make new work that is best “read” off the page or performed in collaboration or in tandem.

Poet and scholar Amaranth Borsuk’s work focuses on textual materiality—from the surface of the page to the surface of language. At Poetry Off the Page, encounter Between Page and Screen, a book that offers “a screen-based reading experience. The pages of this artist’s book contain no text—only abstract geometric patterns and a web address leading to this site, where the book may be read using any browser and a webcam. The poems that appear, a series of letters written by two lovers struggling to map the boundaries of their relationship, do not exist on either page or screen, but in the augmented space between them opened up by the reader” .

In this Q&A with Amaranth Borsuk, intern Taylor Holdaway asks the poet about the substance, experience, and process behind Between Page and Screen.

Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’12: Art, Politics, Media

Members $5, Non-members $10

This year’s book club examines the intersection of art, politics and media. From Shepard Fairey’s now-iconic graphic of President Barack Obama to George Clooney’s The Ides of March, from the OWS movement to the vast industries devoted to creating the visual materials produced for campaigns, from Colbert’s “performance art” to Dick Tuck’s political tricksterism, this topic provides an endless stream of discussion material in an era when visual impressions, sound nanobites and “truthiness” seem to trump facts and substance. Books are available for purchase in MOCAshop.
