Meet Pan Left Productions New Executive Director, Michael Fenlason

Michael Finlason My name is Michael and I am the new Executive Director at Pan Left Productions. I am very excited about working with Pan Left to amplify progressive stories and voices. Pan Left’s mission of providing access to equipment and resources, increasing the capability of organizations and individuals to use and make media, is an essential and vital component to our community both in Arizona and beyond. I come to Pan Left with a background in arts administration and development. I am a working playwright, screenwriter and current Artistic Director at Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, as well as a development associate at the Tucson Museum of Art. I believe the arts and social justice organizations can and should work together. To my mind, Pan Left is an exemplary organization for this process. I have spent many, many years working for causes and issues similar to the Pan Left’s filmmakers and media makers. I believe deeply in what Pan Left does and am proud to be a part. Please feel free to communicate with me. I’ll be learning as much as I can in the next few weeks and hope to meet as many of you as possible.

Battered Immigrant Woman Project – Final Release

In 2007, Pan Left began the process of working with a group that strives to help immigrant women who are the victims of abuse, across 7 Arizona counties.  It’s actually a coalition of several public health organizations from all those different places. It was an extremely important project to work on, the idea being to create a training video for service providers (like doctors, nurses, counselors, police, etc) that explained the rights that battered non-citizen women had, since many people are unsure what they should do when they encounter, in the course of their job, a victim of domestic violence who is not a U.S. citizen. (people often wonder is it legal to help them, etc…)
Over time many Pan Left people including Mary Charlotte Battered Woman Training Video Thurtle worked on the project and when it was finished it was not approved by the Justice Department until recently.
The Training Video can now be seen by clicking on the link below.

Karl W Hoffman Documentary Film Producer- THE UNTOLD TRUTH ABOUT THE AMERICAN-MEXICAN BORDER

Well my film is here for all to view. After achieving international recognition, I was finally OKd to upload my feature length documentary (96min) to youtube, for the world to view on line. Of course it only took 6 years to produce and 48 hours to upload. I decided to premier it on line in my blog at the Tucson Citizen, but there is a link at the bottom of my blog to go direct to youtube. That’s one chapter of my life complete, now back to the gallery and the world of fine art.

New Chip In Launched for Mary Charlotte’s Care and Support!

Our last Chip In was successful, raising nearly $4000 for Mary Charlotte’s care and support. Although she now has insurance, she was uninsured at the time of her diagnosis and the bills are piling up.

But the bills are no match for your care and love and support! We’ve launched a new Chip In with a goal of $10,750 by August 15! Can you help? It’s a great way to make a donation, to read the latest about Mary Charlotte’s progress, and to offer a note of support as she kicks cancer’s ass with a band of dedicated supporters.

Pan Left Productions- US Border Patrol Shoots and Kills US Teen- Lamadrid Family Awaits Answers & Teen Trafficking

Pan Left- US Border Patrol Shoots and Kills US Teen- Lamadrid Family Awaits Answers

“Every murder or other injury, no matter for what cause, committed or inflicted on another is a crime against humanity.” Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

As of the date this video was posted, US Border Patrol Information Office did not respond to the video producers request for comments.

Articles have been printed with conflicting information, regarding this incident. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation of events that took place March 21, 2011 that lead to the death of 19-year-old Carlos Lamadrid. More than one year later, Carlos Lamadrid’s family is still waiting for answers.

US Border Patrol shoots and kills US teen

Teen Trafficking
I am a local photojournalist and developing videographer and am excited to be part of Panleft. Since November 2011, I have been working on a video addressing the issue of domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) in Pima County. It would be easy to assume that this doesn’t exist here if one only looks for statistics concerning arrests of pimps or johns on the books. But that would be an erroneous assumption. The high rate of runaway arrests in Pima County and the scarcity of shelter beds for teens alone suggest that survival sex must be a way of life for some. Our proximity to the border and the fact that Maricopa County has several arrests and convictions on the books makes it hard to assume our county lives in a “bubble” and is protected from such things.

Fortunately, due to a couple of conferences on the topic held in Pima County earlier this year, law enforcement and others who deal with the victims are beginning to look for signs of the problem and finding it exists here.

During the past few months, I have spoken with advocates, law enforcement, staff working with homeless teens and survivors of trafficking as well as their parents. The magnitude, the lack of awareness and the complex changes that need to occur to reduce the problem have been an eye-opening experience for me. As a result, my approach to the subject has shifted since I began.

What I hear often is that at least 80 percent of teens and adults who end up getting trafficked had a history of sexual abuse in their original homes which made them more vulnerable to ending up on the street. It goes often undetected and unreported. In spite of all the current emphasis in the media about tracking sex offenders who have been caught and convicted, the majority of these crimes go unreported because they occur with family members or close friends of the family.

I am therefore including the long-term effects of early child sexual abuse in the picture with DMST. The working title of the video(s) (it may become a series,) is
“The Price of Silence” because it is the lack of communication and support that allows it to breed the horrible consequence.

Would you like to help? I would be interested in talking with anyone who has some insight into this problem to continue my education. I would also like to find an editing coach to help me with the production end of things. I can be reached at 520-303-2672 or Anne Dalton
