Please join us for a lively conversation and showcase about theatrical aesthetics.
With Lauren Gunderson leading a conversation with Mark Jackson, Abi Basch and Members of kInDeRdEuTsCh pRoJeKtS, Laura Hope and JC Lee.

A reception will follow the symposium.

How and/or when does form take focus over content (and visa versa)? In what ways do they inform each other, and how does that impact the audience’s perception? What comes first and how do playwrights determine the governing logic of their plays when exploring newly charted territory in theatrical structure?

Through conversations and debates, we will address the elements of form that are wedded to content, and we will attempt to understand the enigma: “Which came first, the form or the content?”

Playwright Lauren Gunderson [LINK TO http://www.laurengunderson.com (EXIT, PURSUED BY BEAR, EMILIE) moderates this symposium and discusses her thoughts. Playwrights will also discuss their work in these terms as well as provide video presentations depicting their processes.

Past students of Eugenie Chan’s Crack That Whip had the following to say about her class:

“Eugenie is a wonderful teacher. She has a quiver-full of ideas, prompts and exercises to tease out new approaches to your work, to encourage you to go deeper and farther. Also (despite the title of the course), she’s a generous and kind guide who puts the focus on the work (rather than, say, herself). It’s a pure pleasure to be in the room with her.”
–Elizabeth Gjelten, playwright, BAPF alum & NPI student

“I drafted my new play in Eugenie Chan’s workshop in 2009, and recently rewrote it during Anthony Clarvoe’s workshop. The play has been accepted for production in San Francisco this August! Eugenie creates a safe, thoughtful and creative space for writers. Her generous instruction and creative exercises were instrumental in getting the play developed thus far. I recommend Eugenie’s PF workshop highly.”
–Patricia, playwright & NPI student

“…[Through Eugenie's exercises], you realize you know more about your play than you thought you did, that you have already created that world in your mind, you just haven’t put the words to it yet.”
–Nara, NPI student

The Playwrights Foundation- Kicks Off Fall Season at the New Play Institute with Playwright Anthony Clarvoe

Kicking off our fall season (2011) at the New Play Institute is award-winning playwright Anthony Clarvoe, who returns to teach his sold-out series in the East Bay. This wildly popular instructor offers his class: I think I (maybe… kind of… sort of… might…no, do…) Have The First Draft of a Play! (Now what do I do?) – which is a sequel to his previous classes on the full-length play.

Each class period will offer specific tools and techniques that address the process of revisions and rewrites, and give the tools you need to submit finished work to festivals, workshops and theaters once you’re done.

Here’s the catch: there are only four spots remaining of twelve total. This class will sell out, so be sure to register.

Class Description:

Have you accomplished the Herculean task of completing your first (or early) draft? Congratulations! Your family and friends are impressed. Your writers’ group has given you a lot of useful feedback. You’ve got pages of notes, but you aren’t really sure where to go from here.

Enter Anthony Clarvoe, a 25-year veteran playwright who has won commissions, awards and multiple productions for plays ranging from two-handers to big-cast epics. Over eight weeks Anthony will share methods and techniques that will enable you to help you figure out how to enter the revision phase of playwriting gracefully and confidently. It is open to anyone with a finished first draft. I think I Have The First Draft…meets:

Monday Evenings, September 12-November 14 (8 sessions)
(no class on Oct 10th or Oct 31st)
7pm – 10pm

•5% Early Bird Discount MUST REGISTER BY SEPTEMBER 2ND
The class will meet in Berkeley at a location central to public transportation and near to public parking lots.

◦”Anthony is a fantastic instructor! I’ve taken a bunch of playwriting classes [in the bay area] and elsewhere, and no one compares to him.”
◦”Anthony Clarvoe’s workshop is the BEST class I’ve taken through Playwrights Foundation.”
