The Playwrights Foundation- Festival Update, Playwriting classes, Writers Pool and Internship

Festival Update: Interview with Robert Henry Johnson
Well known for his career as one of the Bay Area’s most creative and original dancer/choreographers, Robert Henry Johnson is also–somewhat secretly–a stellar playwright, with a penchant for mind-bending, balletic language compositions that evoke history and its repercussions in visually stunning ways.

For the festival he will be working on his Shakespeare-inspired epic, THE OTHELLO PAPERS, alongside collaborators Ben Guillory (Director) and Dominic Orlando (Dramaturg). We recently talked with Robert about the genesis of the play and his thoughts about artists who span genres: “Unfortunately we live in a country where art disciplines are separate. I am not sure when the disciplines became chopped up into itty-bitty pieces of sushi-like morsels. In other words, if you are a dancer, you are just that and only that. If you are a choreographer, you are that and only that. In my experience throughout my career, I found that that was never true.”
