UNDER ARPAIO

The time is right and the time is now to watch and share Under Arpaio with others. We are making the documentary available on YouTube so that people can learn about the struggle for justice in Arizona and the atrocities perpetuated by Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The struggle against hate and intimidation by racist laws like SB1070 has reached a critical turn. Police are now being trained to enforce SB1070 and arrest people suspected of being undocumented, racial profiling has spread fear in Arizona communities, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio continues to use the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office to intimidate and abuse people without accountability.

We hope that by bringing Under Arpaio to the internet for viewing that we can help raise more awareness about the incredible injustice being committed by Arpaio and the even more incredible fight for justice by the community in the Phoenix area courageous enough to stand up against the Sheriff. Please let friends and allies know they can see the documentary now and help spread the word that Arpaio’s abuses must stop and he must be held accountable.

Thank you to all the people who have supported and worked on this production and thank you to all to those who continue to work for human rights in Arizona and anywhere police abuse is happening.

In Solidarity.

Pan Left A Witness to the Ethnic Studies Struggle

On January 10, 2012, the TUSD governing board, in a 4 to 1 vote, suspended the Mexican American Studies program. But that doesn’t mean the struggle is over. Here is the community reaction outside the meeting after the vote was taken.

TUSD We Will Not Comply

On January 23rd, students organized an arts festival in support of their ethnic studies classes.

U.N.I.D.O.S. Art Festival- Save Ethnic Studies
Democracy Now! covered the closure of the Mexican American Studies program in Tucson using footage provided by Pan Left. To watch the piece, click here.

We are committed to covering the struggle as it unfolds and telling the stories of the students, parents, teachers and youth organizing to save and promote education programs that improve graduation and college attendance rates for all students. If you would like to see more of Pan Left’s videos on ethnic studies, visit our YouTube channel. http://www.democracynow.org/2011/12/29/tucson_orders_closure_of_mexican_american

Homeless Youth to Document their Lives

In February, six homeless youth will receive media training and flip cameras to document their lives. The video they take will be incorporated into web shorts and a feature-length documentary that is currently in production. The production is a part of the Homeless Youth project, a joint venture of Pan Left and the Carlos G Figueroa Foundation.

Look forward to seeing the world from their perspective in the Spring. The documentary will screen at a community forum on homeless youth in the winter of 2012.

The project is funded in part by the Tucson Pima Arts Council P.L.A.C.E. Initiative. Many artists and activists volunteer their time to make this project happen including Angela Soto, Kathleen Dreier, Kim Sessions, Tiffany Goforth and Doug Davis. If you would like to contribute to the Homeless Youth Project, you can do so here.

You can watch video shorts from the Homeless Youth project on the YouTube channel.

Two New Shorts by Youth

Young people who attended our Youth in Action media class have produced two new shorts. Check them out.

The first is by Citlaly and Ludwig who work at the Sam Lena Library.

What Can You Do at Sam Lena Library?
The second is by Nicolette, a member of Tierra Y Liberdad Organization about the 7th Avenue Alleyway Project.

The class was designed for youth to create media about their organizations. It was made possible by Kresge in Tucson/Tucson Pima Arts Council.

Reminder–Redirect Arizona State Taxes to Pan Left!

Use the Arizona State Tax Credit Program to Support Our City High School Class

Do you expect to pay $200 or more in state taxes this year? How would you like to spend that money in your local community instead of sending your tax dollars to be spent by the Republican Arizona State Legislature that brought you SB 1070, severe cuts in education and bans on gay marriage? Well, you can. You have the power to redirect your state taxes to support your community by taking advantage of the Arizona State School Tax Credit Program for our City High class As We See It. As a tax credit, not just a deduction, it means every dollar you donate up to $200 for an individual and $400 for joint filers can be directly taken off your taxes. Yes, it is a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your state taxes while supporting Pan Left! You can donate online using PayPal via the City High School website. After you enter the amount you would like to donate, indicate that your donation is for the “Pan Left Class” by clicking on the link that says “Please specify details in the box below.” Donate now.

To talk to someone directly about this opportunity, please call City High School Executive Director Carrie Brennan, (520) 623-7223 ext. 203. For more information on how the tax program works, contact Mary Charlotte at (520) 792-9171 ext. 1.

AZ 100 Film Project

On December 12, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona after a ceremonial blessing from community faith leaders at St. Monica Parish, 50 undocumented people, their families and supporters marched more than three miles to personally petition the Tucson Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office to immediately close their immigration cases.

Tucson March to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Tucson Grassroots Campaigns: El Rio filmmakers documented this historic event. You can comment on the video here. Click here if you would like more information on the Tucson Grassroots project.

Tucson Grassroots Campaigns: El Rio is a Piper Weinberg and Brenda Limón project that is currently collecting interviews from people involved in a successful 1970 campaign to build a park and neighborhood center. Frank De la Cruz, Nancy Gallen, Isabel Garcia, Rev. John Fife, Fr. Ricardo Elford and Guadalupe Castillo were all present, December 12 at the Tucson ICE office and all participated in the El Rio struggle.

Nationwide, nearly 300,000 cases are currently awaiting review by the immigration courts; given this immense backlog, the Department of Homeland Security has instructed its agents to identify individuals whose deportations are not in the Administration’s interest to pursue. (www.nomoredeaths.org)

Under Arpaio Screens In Alabama and Georgia
Thanks to your support, Under Arpaio screened to enthusiastic crowds in Birmingham and Atlanta last week. Look for highlights of the tour coming soon to the Under Arpaio website.

Last week was not a good one for the sheriff as news of more than 400 uninvestigated sexual assault cases made the headlines, leading Arizona’s members of Congress to call for Arpaio’s resignation. And to top it off, the Department of Justice released a report blasting Arpaio for systemic patterns of civil rights abuses. Now more than ever people need to see the real stories of the lives of people living under Arpaio.

If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the trailer.

As 2011 comes to a close, all of us at Pan Left are prepared to dive into the challenges and celebrations 2012 has in store for us. And we do so knowing we have an incredible community of support. Thank You.

Have a great holiday season,

Pan Left Productions- UNDER ARPAIO Screened to Packed House in Phoenix

UNDER ARPAIO Screened to Packed House in Phoenix

A great screening and turnout for Under Arpaio last Saturday night! Many thanks to the Puente movement, ASU MEChA, and The %99 Unity Fest organizers, and even some credit goes to Sheriff Arpaio who for some reason thought it wise to mention us in a press release as an “unauthorized documentary” with Occupy Phoenix. You can read about that craziness here.

In the end it was a fantastic screening with a lot of enthusiasm and participation from the audience as they learned and shared about the ongoing struggle for justice in Arizona. This was just one of many screenings we hope to bring to the Phoenix area and across the nation.

And we will get there as plans for Alabama are coming along fast and furiously. We are so grateful to those who have donated to the tour! With your support we will be able to show the film, connect with effected communities , and share our experiences on our blog. Many have already showed their generosity online and at the Phoenix screening. WE THANK YOU! But we are not there yet. We still need that continued support from donors and those first 100 donations of $30 or more will get you that historic May 29th Alto Arizona National Day of Action flier and Pan Left Sticker. Don’t wait. Donate today!

Please let your friend and allies know about the film and our tour. Have them join our email list. They can subscribe from forwarding this email or sending a mobile TEXT Msg. “underarpaio” to phone number 22828.

Once again, Thank You All!
