The Rogue Theatre- Presents OTHELLO by William Shakespeare

The Rogue Theatre Presents

a masterpiece of love and jealousy

OTHELLO

by William Shakespeare

Jealousy, revenge and a consuming passion–these emotions drive more than one character in Othello.  What should have been a love story about overcoming adversity, becomes a heart-wrenching tragedy, when one man’s glory as a leader becomes overshadowed by his inability to trust his instincts–and the fidelity of his wife.  Unrivaled in its portrayal of jealousy, Othello contains some of the most rapturous of Shakespeare’s verse, as well as his most intriguing villain.

Othello is unique in the Shakespearean canon, in that it follows only one story line throughout the play.  Mirroring the singular obsession of its main characters, the play brings to life some of Shakespeare’s most complex personalities: the noble Moor, his devoted wife, her wise attendant, Othello’s loyal lieutenant and, of course, Iago, who sets all these lives on a tragic collision course.  This is an intriguing and fascinating journey of love and longing outpacing reason; a story of loving not wisely, but too well.

Director Cynthia Meier says: “There isn’t another play by Shakespeare with this many fully drawn characters on stage together.  These complex characters combined with the all-too-human emotions make Othello rich and deeply personal.  And it’s thrilling to offer this play in the intimacy of the Rogue Theatre.  During the sword fights and the private scenes among the main characters, our audience will feel fully implicated in the drama.”
